Spring is a wonderful time – not just for us, but for pests too. As the months get warmer, pests come out and become more common. They gravitate towards hotspots that offer food, moisture and shelter.

When spring comes, take time to do some spring cleaning. Your goal is not just to declutter. Spring cleaning is also a good way to ensure that you can keep pests off your property. Here are a few pest hotspots to include in your spring cleaning.

Kitchens
The kitchen is very popular among cockroaches, ants, and flying insects. It can also attract rodents, rats and mice. Kitchens offer food and water for these pests. Ants and cockroaches, for instance, are likely to gravitate towards spills, leftovers and sweet residues. Rats may forage through open trash bins. Your kitchen is also susceptible to moths, beetles and weevils, which may be attracted to some of your pantry staple ingredients.

Make your kitchen a top propriety during spring cleaning. Clean out cabinet spaces. Inspect your pantry staples and make sure there are still good. Throw out any out-of-date items. This is also a good time to check if your cabinets, drawers and bins have proper sealing and fix any issues.

Yards and Outdoor Spaces
Your yard and the open spaces surrounding your home can be likened to pests’ first frontier when it comes to access to your home. If these areas are not properly maintained, pests will reach your home’s foundation in time.

So, make sure to keep your outdoor spaces clean. Properly seal off trash bins. Seal off any point of entries big enough for pests. Keep branches, tree stumps and bushes at a safe distance, away from your property’s foundation. These attract termites, which can then easily make their way to your home.
