Summer is around the corner, and as the days get warmer, pest activity increases.

Every summer brings unwelcome pests into your property. Being proactive now can give you the upper hand to prevent unwanted infestations. The following tips can help you manage a pest free home this summer.

1. Close bins and take out your rubbish.
Most common pests are attracted to leftovers; insects and rodents will feast upon the remains and quite possibly nest nearby, if your location provides a consistent food supply.

This is why it is important to keep bins closed, and as clean as possible, to prevent pests. If you’ve noticed signs of pests outside in your garden, it’s important to take immediate action before they find their way inside your home.

2. Fix leaks and remove standing water.
Silverfish, cockroaches, centipedes and earwigs all love moisture, and will take up residence under the sink or toilet – whenever there’s a slight leak. If you’ve caught sight of one of these pests, or spotted wet spots – fix the leak and inspect the caulking around the fittings and fixtures in the bathroom. These pests manage to hide in the smallest gaps.

3. Seal cracks and holes.
All types of pests can enter your property through holes and cracks, so check the seals around your windows and doors.

4. Tidy the garden and use it.
Besides being a nicer place to spend the warmer evenings, a tidy garden can also help disrupt pest infestation.

Keep grass cut short to limit the number of places pests can hide and avoid over fertilising, as heavy sod can become the perfect moist breeding ground for pests.

If you have fruit trees in your garden , make sure you clear up any fallen fruits before they have a chance to rot and attract pests, and keep firewood and mulch away from any entrances to your home.

5. Keep pet food inside.
Pests will be attracted to pet food, so keep it inside or keep a top on it when your pet isn’t eating , although pets are quite resilient , keeping their food away from pests is important for their health and will prevent them from eating fly eggs or pests droppings.
