For many of us in Australia, Christmas isn’t complete without a backyard BBQ, a game of cricket, or a long lunch on the deck. But as the temperature climbs and the summer rains settle in, we aren’t the only ones looking to join the festivities. Mozzies are at their peak during the festive season!
Beyond the annoying bites and itches, mosquitoes in Australia can carry serious risks like Ross River Virus and Barmah Forest Virus. To keep your Christmas lunch from becoming a "bite-fest," here are some quick and easy tips to reclaim your outdoor space.
Use Insect Repellents and Cover Up
When you’re going out to meet up with friends, barbecue or not, make sure you spray and cover up. There are several commercially available repellent sprays that contain DEET, Picaridin, or Lemon Eucalyptus Oil, which have been found to repel mosquitoes.
Also, layer up.Yes, it’s summer but you have to protect yourself. Choose loose, light-colored clothing that keeps you cool while turning off mosquitos. Leggings are no-nos since mozzies can bite through them.
Watch Out for Stagnant Water
Mosquitos only need a bit of water to breed. Before you know it, you’ll find “wigglers” in unchecked saucers, pots, and old tyres. Make sure to empty these out of water.
Likewise, check gutters. Sweep out leaves that may cause water to pool.
When it comes to your pet’s water bowl, change their water daily to make sure there’s no mosquito larvae in them.
Let the Air In
Mosquitos are weak fliers. A little air can shoo them away. When you’re out on your deck or at a barbecue, bring a fan along.
Use Scents
While topical repellent is your best bet, you can add an extra layer of defense using scents. Use anti-mosquito coils and candles. Use them around the perimeter of your get-together area.
You can also use the scent of mosquito-repellent plants. Lemon Myrtle, Lemon-Scented Tea Trees, and Native Rosemary release an aroma that can turn off mozzies!
Be Prepared
If you’re hosting a get-together, be prepared. Surround your site with mosquito coils and other scent repellents. Have topical repellents ready for your guests to use. Give them fans too!
Remember: It’s not just about bringing out the beers and barbies!
By taking five minutes to "mozz-proof" your home, you can focus on what really matters: family, friends, and that second helping of Christmas ham!
